Can The Bible Help With Financial Problems?

The Word of God has over 2,350 verses on how to handle money, possessions, investments, real estate and wealth but less than 500 verses on prayer and less than 500 verses on faith. With so many families under financial pressure, I believe God is trying to get our attention on economic matters.

The Bible declares that “Wealth and riches shall be in thy house.” (Psalms 112:3). The answer to today’s question is a resounding “Yes, the bible can help us with financial matters.” The following four Bible principles can help you with money problems and debt:

1. Plan your spending.“The plans of the diligent lead to plenty,But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty.” (Proverbs 21:5) Don’t rush to buy something just because it’s on sale. Make a financial plan—a budget—and stick to it like your life depends on it.

2. Avoid unnecessary debt. “The borrower is servant to the man doing the lending.” (Proverbs 22:7) If you are already in debt and can’t meet your obligations, try to negotiate new payment plans with your creditors. Be persistent but humble.

3. Keep money in its proper place. “He that rushed to be rich hath an evil eye, and does not that poverty shall come upon him.” (Proverbs 28:22) Envy and greed can lead to financial ruin and crowd out spiritual matters.

4. Be content. “ But if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content (satisfied).” (1 Timothy 6:8) Some of the happiest people in the world do not have a lot of money. What they do have is the love of family and friends and a friendship with God.
